How Buildings Learn
What Happens After They're Built
This book talks about how buildings are changed, typically by their occupants. It considers what motivates changes to buildings, and why there is such a problem in traditional architecture which considers buildings to be permanent. It is full of excellent comparative photographs of buildings and towns and how they've changed over time. The main lesson seems to be to build adaptable buildings since you can be sure that the needs of the occupants will change, and provides some simple ideas about how to design with adaptability in mind. If your architect has not read and accepted the message of this book, get a new architect.
